We take for granted the things we grew up with. The automobile, the microwave, the television, and more… They were just always there for many of us. They were a natural part of our lives and we can’t imagine not having them. Our parents or grandparents did grow up without them – or at least most of them. Can you imagine grandma browsing through her fave shows in www.direct.tv? Here are some of the biggest inventions of the relatively recent past.
- Electric light bulb – unless you’re older, your parents (and probably your grandparents) grew up with the light bulb. Before the bulb, lighting was provided by lamp, fire, and the sky. The light bulb provided a reliable, long-term, safer source of light.
- Automobile – as with the light bulb, this is an older, recent invention. The car made long-distance travel easier, safer, and quicker.
- Television – the TV had a big impact on entertainment. People didn’t necessarily have to go out to a show or picture when they could now watch similar programs at home.
- Radio – the radio, more so than the television, changed entertainment for a lot of people. Information and programming could be broadcast into people’s homes and families gathered around their radios for nightly shows.
- Personal computer – the personal computer changed the way people stored data. Later it enabled them to transmit and share it in new innovative ways.
- Antibiotics – antibiotics enabled physicians to treat illnesses and infections in a way never before possible.
In fifty or one hundred years, a list like this will include things we consider fairly new. And what might our grandchildren grow up with that we haven’t even heard of yet?
